Wondering if pursuing a degree in Agriculture might be right for you? Before you ask, please know that you don’t have to have grown up on a farm to study in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BScAg) program, nor do you need any experience in agriculture. What you DO need is a passion for food, science, business and responsible land use.  U of G’s BScAg program will provide the tools you’ll need to discover a rewarding career path bringing healthy and sustainable food and resources to the world.

What will you study?

Our BScAg program offers three majors to choose from: Honours Agriculture, Crop Science, Animal Science, and Horticulture.

Honours Agriculture

Explore all of the aspects of agriculture with this major, which allows you to gain a broad focus in areas such as plants, animals, the environment, and business.

Crop Science

Regardless of whether you want to focus on agricultural commerce, research, or developing new and exciting methods in crop production, you’re options are wide open with this major. Learn how to grow, breed, and nurture the very thing that provides life on this planet – plants!

Animal Science

If you want to leave your mark on important aspects of this industry such as animal care, welfare and performance, this is the major you’re looking for! It’s also worth mentioning that students have used this program as an entry into a veterinary medicine program.

Crop Science

Regardless of whether you want to focus on agricultural commerce, research, or developing new and exciting methods in crop production, you’re options are wide open with this major. Learn how to grow, breed, and nurture the very thing that provides life on this planet – plants!

Horticulture

Discover the systems behind plants and how to use science to improve the horticultural industry, from food, to flowers, to medicine. You’ll gain experience in greenhouses and controlled environment systems, explore pest management, plant physiology and plant breeding.

Common First Year

All of our BScAg students start their journey by taking the same courses in first year. This ensures all students are prepared and able to select the major that best suits them. Some first year agriculture courses include:

  • Introduction to Agri-Food Systems
  • Biology of Plants and Animals in Managed Ecosystems
  • Elements of Calculus I
  • General Chemistry I and II
  • Economics of the Agri-Food System
  • Agroecology
