Wondering if pursuing a degree in Agriculture might be right for you? For starters, we want you to know that you don’t need to have grown up on a farm to study in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BScAg) program, nor do you need any experience in agriculture.

So what DO you need? Just a passion for food, science, business and responsible land use.  U of G’s BScAg program will give you the tools to discover a rewarding career path bringing healthy and sustainable food to the world. 

What will you study?

Our BScAg program offers three majors to choose from: Honours Agriculture, Animal Science, and Crop, Horticulture and Turfgrass Sciences.

Honours Agriculture

Explore all of the aspects of agriculture with this major, which allows you to gain a broad range of knowledge in areas such as plants, animals, the environment, and business.

Animal Science

If you want to leave your mark on important aspects of this industry such as animal care, welfare and performance, this is the major you’re looking for! Students in this major have even gone on to complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at our very own Ontario Vet College!

Crop, Horticulture and Turfgrass Sciences

Regardless of whether you want to focus on agricultural commerce, research, or developing new and exciting methods in crop production, your options are wide open with this major. Learn how to grow, breed, and nurture the very thing that provides life on this planet – plants!

Common First Year

All of our BScAg students start their journey by taking the same courses in first year. This ensures all students are prepared and able to select the major that best suits them. Some first year agriculture courses include:

  • Introduction to Agri-Food Systems
  • Biology of Plants and Animals in Managed Ecosystems
  • Elements of Calculus I
  • General Chemistry I and II
  • Economics of the Agri-Food System
  • Agroecology
  • Introduction to Molecular and Cellular Biology

BSc in Agriculture grads are in High Demand!

We expect the world’s population to reach 9 billion by the year 2025 – that’s a lot of mouths to feed! Because of this, agriculture is currently one of Canada’s largest industries, meaning there are many jobs available with a high demand for graduates from the agriculture industry!

Kurtis Pilkington is a 2020 BScAg grad with an exciting future

If you’ve looked through our 2021 Admission Viewbook, you’ve likely read about Honours Agriculture student, Kurtis Pilkington and his desire to explore the different jobs and research opportunities available to BScAg grads. We reached out to Kurtis recently and this is what he had to say:

“I'm currently working for Maizex Seeds, a corn and soybean seed company, as a research intern. I started there at the end of the summer after a delay due to COVID and have been concluding research on various agronomy and seed variety trials. Come January I will be returning to Guelph to begin a Masters in Plant Agriculture in the field of Crop Production Systems.”
