Country-Specific Information for International Students

Why Apply to the University of Guelph?

We believe that going to university means more than getting an education. It means connecting on campus with your peers, being supported academically, financially, and socially, and knowing we’ve got your back. At the University of Guelph, it means being part of one of the best university communities in Canada and we have the numbers to prove it.

With a rich history and small size (133,000 people), Guelph offers the perfect blend of major city vibes and a tightly-knit small town. We’re only an hour’s drive from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) with GO buses leaving the University Centre hourly. But make no mistake: Guelph is no suburb. It’s a vibrant and diverse city that embraces U of G students from all across the world.

Melanie Moore, University of Guelph International Student

I have been lucky to make great connections with mentors here who enable me to explore my passion for research in the field of parasitology. Last summer I worked with veterinary parasitologist Dr Andrew Peregrine, and our research was focused on determining the prevalence of the fox tapeworm and other intestinal parasites, in dogs visiting off-leash dog parks in southern Ontario. The hands-on experience of identifying para-sites under the microscope will be helpful to me this summer when I travel to Nepal as part of the Global Vets program to work closely with experienced veterinarians identifying common intestinal parasites endemic to cats and dogs in this region.

Xiaoting (Viki) Ma, University of Guelph International Student

The University of Guelph has a fantastic academic reputation and the campus is known for being very safe and friendly which was the first thing my parents and I recognized. When I first came here, I knew nobody, but now I walk across campus and I constantly see my friends and classmates. I also love that my program combines human interaction with logical-mathematical procedures because it really complements my passions.

Annabella Ademan, University of Guelph International Student

I love a lot of things about Guelph, both the city and the University as a whole. But the major thing that I really like is the sense of togetherness; everybody just loves one another, they help each other, and the kindness and politeness is incredible. I’m not a big fan of huge cities, I prefer smaller cities. And though the city of Guelph is still quite large, it gives you a small-town feeling making it peaceful, a great environment to study, and the students are amazing!

Ahmed El Maghawry, University of Guelph International Student

It’s been fantastic studying engineering and focusing on an important topic like the environment. I’ve loved being able to apply the skills I learn in class in each of my co-op work terms. I can take this experience and apply it to career opportunities to come. I also love the balance that U of G has when it comes to academics and athletics. I was able to maintain my place on the dean’s honour list while medaling at the Ontario University Athletics swimming championships!

Besides the delicious food and the beautiful campus, I love the sense of community here. As an international student far away from home, it's great to be in a welcoming and supportive environment where the talented faculty and staff want you to succeed. The University of Guelph is a fantastic place for anyone who wants to explore and develop their passions and skills in meaningful ways.

Norman-Osman, University of Guelph International Student

When I was applying to schools around the world, I kept hearing great things about the University of Guelph’s science degree. All those things were true! I love that my program gives me the opportunity to apply my chemistry learning in real-world scenarios. The hands-on learning that my classes implement has allowed me to feel prepared for what I will be facing once I enter the scientific working world. Also training service dogs during my free time has been a really rewarding experience and has made my time here special!

Toygar Yildirim, University of Guelph International Student

My Marketing Management major provides me with many opportunities to work on my communication skills. I attend various events, seminars, and fairs and interact with professionals, faculty, and other students. My co-op also improved this skill because I had to communicate effectively in my interview and then practiced verbal and written communication every day while interacting with prospective international students.

Mikkel Hansen, University of Guelph International Student

It’s tough to balance your schedule with practice, workouts, games and classes but for me it was all about finding a routine. I spent a year and a half in the Student-Athlete Mentorship Program which helped me get organized. In this program, I was paired with a mentor who happened to be an upper-year varsity hockey athlete, so it was easy to relate to them. They helped me figure out how to manage my time and prepare for assignments. I highly recommend this program to future Gryphon athletes.

Jonathan Riccio, University of Guelph International Student

I applied to the Ontario Veterinary College because of their reputation for producing outstanding veterinarians. Seeing how passionate the teaching professionals are about research has helped open my eyes to the many veterinary opportunities that exist outside of general practice. Our hands-on work in the labs with specialists led me to discover my passion for radiology. My plan after graduation is to enroll in a rotating internship program with the hopes of getting into a diagnostic imaging residency.
