Why Philosophy Studies?

Ask Big Questions

In philosophy, you will tackle the big and small questions that leaders in our governments are faced with every day as they make decisions and create laws that govern our choices.

We ask mind-bending questions like:

  • Should billionaires have access to privatized space exploration?
  • What are the ethical considerations in Zoo captivity?
  • Can self-driving cars make better ethical decisions than humans?
  • Is there a such thing as "privacy" in the digital world?
  • Does life start at conception or beyond?

Find Big Answers

New answers to these questions are being formed every day, all while new questions are being asked of our societies, our environments, and our humanity. Philosophy creates accountability for the various perspectives, while also allowing for flexibility when the decision requires it.

Students in the Philosophy PHIL program may also be interested in studying English, Sociology, Psychology, Classical Studies, or other majors.

Learn to Question Everything Around You

Find Joy in Grappling with Ideas

Philosophy is about challenging our assumptions, values, and biases. It’s about finding problems with arguments and having fun challenging yourself to think outside of the box. Topics include:

  • artificial intelligence
  • feminism and gender
  • the environment
  • medicine
  • the nature of reality or the mind
  • social and political justice

 Gain a Critical Viewpoint

In a time where people are challenged to decide what’s real news or fake news, what’s true or false, where bias and prejudice make their way on to our social media feeds, computers, and TVs; philosophy teaches you to think critically about what you read and hear, consider various perspectives, question your own beliefs and assumptions, and create clear arguments.

Pursue a Career in Any Industry

You'll develop strong communication, critical thinking, and effective problem-solving skills, which will benefit you and any future organization you work for.

I think the University of Guelph gave me the confidence to do what I did after school and pursue my career path. I focused on how I wanted to be in my last year of school and that was a big shift for me.
